Some time ago, I was working for a large corporate and ended up in a meeting about their upcoming website refresh. I wasn’t working on the website and had no real reason to be in the room, but somehow, there I was. When the conversation turned to the landing page layout, I found myself, as I so often do, with an opinion.
There was a band of white space between the banner and the content, which I felt was a place of rest for the eye in an otherwise very full page. The team was talking about using it for the Search box, but I felt it would spoil that lovely band of space. Some argued for using every available pixel, I restated my opinion, and the conversation moved on. When the page was finally built, I saw that the Search box had been moved and the white space was there in all its peaceful beauty – just as I’d hoped.
For the next few years, every time I visited that page, I’d see that simple band of white space and feel a quiet sense of pride. It wasn’t a big deal – just a small moment – but it stuck with me.
In a career centred around complex projects with big wins, it’s funny how those small, almost unnoticed moments can deliver a special kind of satisfaction. Every time I saw that white space I felt proud of my contribution – literally nothing! – and it still makes me smile today.
What’s a small moment that still makes you smile, even years later?
